The Creation of a Unicorn

Title: Unicorn

Original title: Enhjørning

Year: 2014

Size: 120 x 120 cm

Medium: Acrylic paint on canvas

IN PRIVATE HANDS

Sometimes the canvas itself decides what the outcome will be. My original idea in March this year was to paint a unicorn with a simple black background. After a couple of days a castle and a planet entered the scene and the project suddenly turned huge.

I early wanted to paint a mermaid in the picture, but after a few months I gave up that idea since I already was starting to get really tired of the whole project. I do have patience, and this has been my biggest test so far, I think :)

Anyhow, the mermaid turned up one evening I was sitting talking with my son. In the corner of my eye I could see something splashing in the water by the rocks. It was just an illusion, but then I knew she wanted to be painted and I knew where she was to be located. A day later she was in her place.

It took me more than 250 hours over nine months to finish the 120 x 120 centimeter painting. My main tool was a 3/0 sized brush (the two blue ones in the picture are one well used and one new) - which I had to replace six times.

Prints in various materials, greeting cards, phone cases and more is available at FineArtAmerica. (FAA is shipping all over the world from US and GB).
